A teacher gets inspiration from his students

tudents are his inspiration. Actually, students are unique, and not all students say that his lesson is interesting. But, he makes his lesson become interesting and understood easily. After back from Japan, he gave an advice for us, that one key we have to keep in our profession is ‘serve’.

He said, “I am teacher and I have to teach you.”

Maybe some teachers want to be ‘respected’, but it’s not too important for him. He never forces his students to respect him. Unlike the common teacher, this teacher is a student’s friend, besides he teaches. He is Mr. Kuswanto Daryono, a person who has so many achievements, still regard his students as his friend. He’s not dignity to close to the people.

As a Social Studies teacher in Junior High School 2 Karanglewas, Mr. Kuswanto is liked by many students. But he always thinks that actually he’s not sure if many students like him. He thinks the students respect him and he just their teacher and they are his students. He just wants to position him, himself as teacher and as student’s friend. That’s simple for him, that usual, for all students to come to his house and have a consultation freely.

A student of Junior High School 2 Purwokerto, Yazida claimed that Mr. Kuswanto was a friendly teacher and deemed him as her father.

“He has ‘father side’ and his teaching way is so much fun. He also has so many achievement in many kind of field, like Social, English, ICT, etc. He is very patient in teaching his students, especially naughty students. He never discriminated and intimidated his students in study,” said Yazida.

Another students, Devi who was really fanatic with him added.

“Mr. Kus is a very humble person.  He’s a great person I’ve ever known,” she said.

Back to main job, as a teacher. He started his career in 1998, he was a teacher in Junior High School 2 Karanglewas up to now. Before that, he studied in IKIP Yogyakarta.

His commitment in teaching is “I will give my best”.

But, sometimes he got some problems while teaching. It is in students who come from lower economic condition. It was complicated because their passion and motivation are low. Some of them don’t decide to study to higher level education. But, he doesn’t deem it as a problem, but as a challenge for him. And the other problem is in English. Most of his students are confused about it. But they usually don’t study hard, they also don’t join any course and just study at school. Though he had offered them free course in his own house, but no one interested in his offer.

It was amazing when before he teaches, he always prepares material as well as possible for the students. He studies before teaching, and reads many books, not only certain books.

Social Study is a lesson that interesting in his eyes. Actually, it’s a study which gives knowledge to people to be a good citizen. It is challenge full, because in one hand he has to give the lesson based on the curriculum, but in the other hand, he has to give his students the reality or contextual.

One of his success factor is language. He said that language is very important.

“If you have one language, you have one key and can only enter one room. But if you have two languages, you have two keys and can enter two rooms,” he said.

He can broad his opinion, and he never think to be a teacher in Junior High School 2 Purwokerto. But he thought that he will abroad.

He has ever gone to Japan because of scholarship from Monbukagapusho, the ministry of national education Japan. He found it in internet, and then applied the scholarship. He thought that higher grade, need higher mark, and need higher average too. So he always prepares it as well as possible. He also has ever gone to Hong Kong because of winning the competition. That competition is creation and innovation of teaching media. Actually, all teachers can do that, but they have some diseases. Most diseases of people are lazy. About his competition, actually he never thinks to be the winner. But, he thinks that by joining the competition, he can refresh his knowledge and compare it to all teachers around Indonesia.

At the last, he gave his time to give some advices for the student in 9^th grade of Junior High School 2 Purwokerto to face National Examination.

“No other ways, but you have to study hard. There are many scholarships there, to be student of Senior High School in Singapore, so reach it. Don’t think narrowly. We have to realize our world is large. Study hard to face the world.”
